With the rise of NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) deals in college athletics, few athletes have capitalized on the opportunity like Olivia Dunne.
The 21-year-old LSU gymnastics star is the only woman in the top five of the highest-earning NIL athletes, sitting at number two overall.
With 5.4 million followers on Instagram, Dunne has successfully merged her athletic career with influencer status.
Yet, despite her immense online presence, Dunne admits to keeping certain aspects of her personality, like her sense of humor, away from the public eye.
Dunne faces a struggle between being an athlete and an influencer
Olivia Dunne's success didn't come without its challenges. As her social media following surged, she faced the pressures of balancing her identity as both an athlete and a public figure.
Speaking on the Amazon Prime docuseries The Money Game, Dunne shared her internal conflict.
"I had a hard time balancing if I should feel my body like a model... or an athlete?" Dunne explained on The Money Game.
To navigate these pressures, Dunne carefully studied her audience. Although she considers herself funny, her fans were more interested in content that highlighted her gymnastics journey and lifestyle.
"People like certain content from me. I would consider myself kind of funny. But people don't wanna see me being funny," she explained.
Recognizing this, Dunne tailored her brand to focus on what worked, keeping her comic side mostly hidden.
Olivia's older sister, Julz Dunne, has been instrumental in helping her craft her online image. Despite Olivia downplaying her sense of humor, Julz has a different take. In the second episode of The Money Game, Julz playfully teased Olivia.
